Comments: Hello, My Grandfather, Harry Prendergast VX31011, was a POW who departed with "A Force". He was with the AASC. I have some photo's that appear to show him, and others, at their recovery in 1945. If anyone is interested, or can help me identify the pictures please let me know.

Comments: Gidday all. My Grandfather was Walter Blake (VX61042) of the 2/2 Pioneer Battalion. Has was captured in Java and worked on the Burma Thailand railway. For most of his life he very very rarely spoke about the war and his experience at all. I did get him to speak about it to some extent only once when I was at university in the early 1980s. He died in 1998. He was a reasonably tall man and quite dark skinned, and I understand he may have been 'given a belting' once or twice because of it. I recall his view that the Japanese weren't as bad as the Korean guards, and also that he expressed the view that the Dutch were sometimes unpopular in the camps. If anyone should happen to come across information concerning which particular camps he was in, or what tasks he/they was doing, or if he is mentioned in anyones recollections, I would certainly love to hear from you. Kind regards James Blake

He was, prior to the war a first grade Rugby League footballer with both South Sydney and St. George. Jack died on the line and is buried in the Thanbuyzat War cemetary. Comments: My Father was a member of the 2/40th Battalion, Sparrow Force, I think and held captive by the Japanese after being captured in Timor. He worked and survived the Burma railway but died in 1978. He was private LAJ (Jim) Maddox of Black Hills Tasmania. He would not tell anything of his enslavement. It would be great to know of a survivor of the railway that remembers him.

Comments: It is with great sadness that I have just learnt of Ernie Redman's passing - a huge loss to the BTRMA and the people of Esperance. I had the pleasure of Ernie's company on the four Quiet Lion Tours I took part in. Ernie always wore a smile and was always surrounded by his "harem" as we called them - the (usually female) students from Esperance who treasured Ernie as a second grandfather. Ernie and the other POWs who are the backbone of the BTRMA are enduring examples of the Aussie spirit. I'm sure there's a special place for you with your mates in Heaven, Ernie. Time to rest, mate, you've done your bit.

Comments: I feel very privileged to have been on the 2009 Quiet Lion Tour. To spend time with ex-POWs Snow Fairclough, Neil MacPherson and Bill Haskell, “Uncles” so-called by our Thai guides, was an experience to treasure. These men have seen and survived the worst of man’s inhumanity to man but also the best of the compassion and self-sacrifice of mateship. When they related events in their steady measured tones, the impact was very telling. Occasionally a memory would tap them on the shoulder and we could see and share a little of their pain. The trip wasn’t just a sombre pilgrimage however, it was also a kaleidoscope of experiences, travelling by longtail boat, Thai Railways and air-conditioned bus. Enjoying exotic meals on a river cruiser, a floating restaurant, a pontoon raft, a balcony overlooking the River Kwae and luxurious well appointed hotel dining rooms. Then there was the shopping, acres of bustling, colourful, lively stalls with the excitement of seeking the right gift at the right price. The Anzac Day service of Hellfire Pass was the exact opposite and gave us all time to reflect and think our own thoughts on all who “gave their tomorrows for our today.” All in all the Quiet Lion Tour is a credit to the Burma Thailand Railway Memorial Association and I would recommend it to anyone.

Comments: I have in my posession a bronze medallion which I believe was made in Bampong for Japanese officers to celebrate the completion of the Thailand/Burma railway. The medallion belonged to a relative who served in the British army and was captured by the Japanese in Singapore in 1942. The Australian war memorial site -http://cas.awm.gov.au/heraldry/REL/19904 - suggests that there are only 6 of these medallions known to exist. I would be interested to contact any readers who have information about such medallions.

Comments: My mothers brother (my uncle), who of course I never met, died of dysentery on the railway. He was Private Dennis Minahan VX64674. He was a reinforcement for the 2/29 Infantry Battalion. He died on the 10/5/43 and is buried in the Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, grave A11.C1. The last work group he was in was Force A. If anyone knows of him or members of his battalion or their family would like to email me, I would like to hear from you. Thank you in advance.

Comments: Dear Sirs, My name is Michael Noble and my father was a POW Qx14864 Roy (Stewart) Noble. For the last Ten years I have been doing diplays at our local Libraries and schools in memory. I started with my father and since then I have been trying to include as many people as I can with each year being different from the last. In those early days I contacted Mr McPherson and he offered me some wonderful support and assistance , and I would like to take this Opportunity to say thankyou. Especially now that my two young Daughters Caitlin 11 and Maddison 9 have started assisting me in keeping the memory of all those who have served alive for future generations. I find great inspiration from all the wonderful ExPOW's that I have been fortunate to meet,so when times have been a bit hard for me I look at the contribution that you all have contributed to the world and it gets me motivated to go again and for this I personally thank you. Please find attached a digital copy of our Little thank you, and also the newspaper article. thank you Mic, Caitlin & Maddison

Comments: I am researching my Great-Uncle William Edward SMITH NX45070 who was captured in Java, March 1942 and sent to the Burma-Thai Railway - possibly with A Force Januay 1943. William was killed whilst being held on the Japanese ship TAMAHOKO MARU which was torpedoed on 24th June 1944 off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. I would like to find out where Uncle William was during the time of March 1942 until June 1944 and if/where he was on the Burma-Thai railway. Any information would be greatly appreciate. Wonderful site. Thankyou for this moving memorial to these endearing people.

I am looking for any information about the 2/2nd Australian Pioneers who served in Syria, Java, on the Railway (1st forming) and New Guinea, Tarakan, Borneo, Balikpapan (2nd forming) so I can complete a website for the 2/2nd Pioneers Younger Generation Group (I am a member - more members are great). Every bit helps! Stories, photos, notes. In answer to a query, the Battalion history book can be purchased from the 2/2nd Pioneer Association in Melbourne. Emails welcome! Thanks, Cary

Comments: I have learned a lot on this tour - the greatest lesson of all was the one about Mateship. Neil's poem at the reef laying service was very dear to me but became truely meaningful when after the serice Snow was doing the rounds and visited all his mates who died, saluted them and made a toast to each one of them. I hope that I will also one day be just as priveledge to have great mates. Another picture comes to mind when Bill was telling a story of Toby at the cutting and with tears in his eyes he had to stop as he became so overwhelmed. Ernie's mate Toby meant a lot to all! Thank you for sharing with us - we are very priveledge!

Comments: I am a teacher at the ESHS and was lucky enough to accompany the 10 students from our school this year. As a born South African who spend my last 8 years in UK I was not emotionaly or mentally prepared for what was installed for me! I was looking forward to learn more about Thailand and to hear the war stories from the people who have been there. My family and I got aquinted with Ernie Redman through out our fundraising events during December 2007, I was looking forward in accompanying him and relive a part of history. However - it became a personal journey for me ... I only came to realise that every single person in this generation has a link to WWI and WWII - my own grandfather was an POW in Italy after he fought under the British flag in Egypt. My husband's grandfather was a POW in Java - comming on this tour gave me personal growth in realising that all these people, soldiers, mothers, wifes, sisters, uncles or children had paid a price. I came to realise that it was worth it for each one of them as they truely loved their countries and believed in what they were doing. Most of all I went as an oursider but came back an AUSTRALIAN - and I am proud of it! Thank you very much to the tour opperator Eric for a most interesting, funfilled tour. Thank you very much to the chairman Roger and his team for making history part of my story. However I am the most greatful to our exPOWs, Bill, Snow, Ernie, Wallie and Neil for sharing their emotional momories with us! You guys are GREAT and we will ALWAYS be thankful!

Comments: It was the greatest experience in my life! I would like to thank every one for the support and effort they have put into the QLT 2008. I was looking forward to the trip but did not think in my wildest dreams that I would learn and grow that much! The whole Anzac day and the build up to it showed me what a great gift we have received from our anchestors who fought in the WWII and other wars. They gave their lives so that we can have freedom and liberty - may we never forget that! I will make it my own personal mission to tell all my friends and my own children one day, about the priveledge to be an Australian. The exPOWs are true heroes and we are so privledge that they are still here to share their story with us. THANK YOU!!!

Comments: Thanks for the great site. As we approach Anzac Day 2008, recent attention on the TBR inspired me to do a bit more research and so I find myself here. My father was Pte J.A. Daley, 105 Aust Gen Tspt Coy (Petrol Park) VX27086. Jack, or Jim as he was also known, passed away in Dec. 2005 aged 92. One book that may be worthy of inclusion in your reading list is "One fourteenth of an elephant" by Ian Denys Peek. (ISBN 0 7329 1168 0). Dad thought this Englishman's 'matter-of-fact' description of the daily difficulties of PoW life gave a good account of how it was. Salutations to all PoWs, returned servicemen and servicewomen and their family and friends. Lest We Forget

Comments: Harry Nankivell , VX18564 was in 2/2 Pioneer Battalion and a POW somewhere in Thailand. His theatre of war was Java after the Middle East. Harvey was the dear partner to my grandmother and a gentler, kinder and more humble man you'd never find. Never a harsh word for anyone. He'd rather leave the room. I'd love to meet someone else that knew Harvey and could tell me a story or two.

Comments: Thank you for your wonderful site. I have recently started researching my family history and have learnt that my Father's Cousin, Alfred James Bone QX 9463, 2/10 Field Regt. AIF. was "entrained to F Force" 18.4.43, he died in "Burma" 12th Oct 1943. The Commonwealth War Graves site says his Grave/Memorial is Ref A5 A2 Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery. I am not sure if this means he is in fact buried there or if his name is on a memorial plaque. Once again thank you to the tireless people who undertake sites such as this one.

Comments: Great site, great information. I can remember my father, Pte Garry Hooper, 2/2 Pioneer Btn, telling me about some of his experiences on the Burma Railway. Sadly he passed away in 1998 and, as I get older and my grand children arrive, I wish I knew more to pass on to the children. I have managed to piece together a rough outline of his service through his stories and reading various books and sites like this. I know there is a book about the 2/2 Pioneers...can anyone tell me where I can get a copy?

Comments: I have just finished reading "The Burma Railway, Hellships & Coalmines" Wow i found it hard to put this book down! It brought a tear to my eyes in many parts and embeded in my mind the hardships that these men suffered at the hands of the Japanese. It also reminds me of the harsh reality that material things mean very little and that true friendships, mateships mean't the difference between life and death.

Comments: Thank you for this excellent site. This site has thrown a very personal and yet informative light on the war years of my father Jim Sutherland ( No 1 Sqdn. RAAF - Kota Bahru, Burma-Thai Railway POW, Singapore POW, Awa Maru, Senryu POW) who died this year, August 2007. Like others who have commented in this guest book, not much was said of those years at home, and it is only now I begin to fully appreciate what happened thanks to the few sites like this. Comments: I think your site is wonderful. My father (Ronald William Wyllie) who is nearly 90 years of age was a Prisoner of War in Changi and attached to the Burma Railway. He is a fantastic person and has so many stories, both good and bad to tell, of his experiences in wartime. If anyone wishes to correspond with him, please contact my email address. Thank you once again for an informative and memorable site. Regards, Karen Jones

Comments: I am Dutch. and one of the survivals of the Death Railway. I really admire and appreciate the work of the Association. Untill now here in Holland there is not such a drive to pass the history of the Railway to future generations as you do in Australia. What a splended webbsite !! The only thing I want to say is : THANK YOU !!

Comments: My grandmothers first husband, Rees Anthony CROCKER VX65455, 25/27 Ind Bde Wkshp, was one of the many unlucky Australians who survived the Railway but perished following the sinking of the Rakuyo Maru on 12 September 1944. I thank you for this wonderful website on behalf of my Aunt and Uncle, children of Rees, who have very little knowledge of their fathers life and have only information researched and shared by people like you to give them some insight into what he went through. If anyone knew Rees or is able to help me find out his movements between the fall of Singapore and his death on the Rakuyo Maru I would be most pleased to hear from them.

Comments: Sites such as this are invaluable. Neil MacPherson has been a source of great encouragement to me in finally completing work on compiling and editing Mick McCarthys Diary. Mick and Neil served on the railway together from the 35 kilo camp on, to the end of the war. Mick willingly participated in the work until his death in 1995 so that we could understand part of our history - an objective in common withthe BTRMA Inc. Congratulations on a wonderful project to all of you who have contributed. Tony.
